How you get your EIN depends entirely on how you filed your state paperwork in the previous step.
Path 1: The Auto-Generated Route
If you used a LegalTech service like Bizee, ZenBusiness, or LegalZoom to form your LLC or Corporation, check your package details.
- Action: Log into your service dashboard. Most mid-tier and premium packages automatically generate your EIN for you as soon as the state approves your business.
- If they did this for you, simply locate the 9-digit number and download the official IRS letter from their portal.
Path 2: The DIY Route (Free & Instant)
If you filed your formation documents directly with the California Secretary of State, you need to request your EIN directly from the IRS. It takes about 10 minutes.
- Action: Go to the IRS Online EIN Assistant.
- Cost: 100% Free.
- The "Gotcha": Unlike modern websites, the IRS application tool actually "closes" at night. You can only apply Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The CP575 Warning 🚨
At the very end of the IRS online application, you will see a screen with your new 9-digit EIN and a button to download your confirmation letter (known as form CP575).
You MUST download and save this PDF immediately. You cannot log back into the IRS website later to download it again. If you lose it, you have to call the IRS and wait weeks for a replacement copy in the mail.
